What the numbers and letters on a tyre mean

A line such as 225/45 R17 94Y XL describes far more than wheel diameter. Every part helps identify a suitable replacement.

The main size

  • 225 — nominal section width
  • 45 — profile as a percentage of width
  • R17 — radial construction and rim diameter
  • 94Y — load and speed rating

Common extra markings

  • XL — extra-load construction
  • C — commercial or van application
  • CP — camping or motorhome application
  • 3PMSF — severe-snow marking
  • Manufacturer-specific run-flat codes

Why close-looking is not enough

Changing width, profile, load or speed specification can affect clearance, handling and legal suitability. Confirm the full marking.
