Roadside safety

What to do after a tyre blowout

A sudden blowout is frightening. Focus first on vehicle control and a safe stopping position; the tyre comes afterwards.

While the vehicle is moving

  • Hold the wheel firmly and look where you want to go
  • Avoid a sudden heavy brake input
  • Ease off the accelerator and let speed reduce
  • Signal and move to a safe stopping place when traffic allows

After stopping

Use hazard lights and follow official guidance for the road. Do not stand beside the damaged wheel on the traffic-facing side.

ImportantCall 999 if the vehicle is in a live lane, anyone is injured, there has been a collision or road users face immediate danger.

Details for the fitter

  • Exact location and direction
  • Registration and tyre size
  • Whether the wheel or body was struck
  • Whether the vehicle was driven after pressure loss
  • A photograph only when safe
